AN ENAMELLED AND ENGRAVED COMMEMORATIVE SILVER DISH
Kashmir, Northern India, mid to late 19th century, inscribed 1876 - 1877
Of typical circular shape, with a short stepped cavetto and a narrow ridged rim, the front engraved with dense scrolls of rosette trellis, the background enamelled in turquoise, the back incised with a dedication to Dr. Norman Chevers M. D. (1818 - 1886), an English physician and surgeon of the Bengal Medical Service, from his friends, admirers and graduates of the Medical College of Calcutta, Bengal, of which he was the Principal from 1862 until his retirement and return to England in 1876, 21.5cm diam.
