We are grateful to Michael Baggott, author of An Illustrated Guide to York Hallmarks 1776-1858 & a Transcript and Index of the York Assay Office Ledger 1805-1821 (2010), for confirming that while there are entries in the ledger for Barber and Whitwell for a pepper caster and a pepper box, the most likely entry is for a ‘chased muffineer’ on 14th July 1818.
