With a deep body and a flaring octagonal rim, painted to the interior with a central roundel depicting a black ship (kurobune) manned by a European crew, surrounded by variously shaped cartouches containing groups of foreign merchants and further ships, all on a ground of feathery scrolls and geometric patterns, the exterior mirroring the design
