A LARGE 18TH CENTURY FRENCH LOUIS XV PERIOD PAINTED AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTED BRACKET CLOCK SIGNED CAUSARD (THE KING'S CLOCKMAKER) the caddy top surmounted by an ormolu model crest of a ho-ho bird amongst foliage, over the shaped case with C scroll and acanthus leaf mounts, on rocaille cast feet, painted throughout with roses (redecorated), the arched gilt door opening to the enamel dial with Roman numerals, signed to the centre 'CAUSARD HGR DU ROY SUIVT LA COUR', the back of the case and the back door signed 'MARCHANT', the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and four spoke outside countwheel striking on a bell fitted in the top, with verge escapement, with pendulum, the matching bracket similarly decorated, the clock 95cm high x 51cm wide, 135cm high overall Causard is listed in Tardy as working in Paris from 1755 and, as the inscription on the dial indicates, was King Louis XVI's clockmaker.
