A SMALL MAMLUK BRASS BOWL Egypt or Syria, 14th - 15th century Of circular form, on flat base, the exterior finely incised with intertwined cartouches filled with vegetal motifs and rosettes, the base decorated with a triumph of rosettes, lattice work and geometric motifs against a chequered background, each decorative element presenting thin lines on the borders consistent with precious metal inlay techniques of the time, 17cm diam. The decoration and shape of our lot is very similar to a brass bowl sold at Roseberys London, 23 October 2017, lot 312. This was catalogued as Ayyubid and presented interesting Christian and planetary imagery. It is reasonable to assume that Mamluk craftsmen could have inherited the design and shape of these bowls from their predecessors, the Ayyubids.
