λ TWO MAMLUK BLUE AND WHITE HEXAGONAL POTTERY TILES
Damascus, Ottoman Syria, ca. 1420-50

Comprising two typical Mamluk hexagonal tiles, one in fragmentary state, underglaze painted in blue and black, featuring two regardant birds perched opposite each other on a dense vegetal spray, further foliate decoration growing from the corners, 14.7cm x 15.2cm; and the latter complete, underglaze painted in blue and black, with a floral and vegetal decoration filling the centre, the tile mounted on an ivory and mother-of-pearl-inlaid wooden frame with geometric motifs, the sides carved with arches and inlaid with pieces of mother-of-pearl shaped into rosettes-filled vases, the reverse with a screw fixing suggesting that it was once affixed to a stand, 22.8cm x 22.8cm x 5cm.
