A KASHMIRI LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ AND COPPER HUQQA (WATER PIPE)
Kashmir, Northern India, late 19th - first quarter 20th century

Of typical compressed bulbous shape, resting on a circular base, rising to a ringed cylindrical neck surmounted by two detachable narrow tubes, one for the furnace and burning coal cup, and the latter the smoking chamber and mouthpiece, the copper body and detaching components enhanced with polychrome-painted, gilt and lacquered papier-mâché decoration featuring colourful flower bouquets and stylised leaves against a ground of gilt scrollwork, 50cm x 14.5cm (highest and widest points).
