SEVEN COMPANY SCHOOL PAINTINGS OF RENOWNED INDIAN ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS
Delhi school, Northern India, ca. 1820 - 1840
Opaque pigments, white wash, ink and pencil on paper, comprising seven illustrations in horizontal format of renowned Indian architectural landmarks including several views of the Royal Gate and Mausoleum of the Taj Mahal, one view with the river Yamuna in the foreground; the Moti Masjid at the Agra Fort; the Jama Masjid in Delhi; and the Lucknow residence of Claude Martin (5 January 1735 – 13 September 1800), a French soldier later promoted to the rank of major-general in the British East India Company's Bengal Army; each painting set within black rules and accompanied by an English identification inscription in either sepia ink or pencil, three paintings presenting also an identification inscription in Arabic characters in black ink at the back, some papers watermarked with the names of well-known English papermills like J. Whatman and A. Cowan and Sons, and dated 1829 and 1831, the largest 44.7cm x 63cm and the smallest 11.2cm x 18cm.
