Autograph letter signed ('Nelson') to Sir William Hamilton, reading "I have to request that your Excellency will demand from this Government whether the King of the Two Siciles is at War with a Country calling itself the Ligurian Republic, or weither the King intends to protect in his Ports the Flag of that Republic (known as the Republic of Genoa), with which the King our Master is at War, and which can only be considered as a Country conquered by the French", one page, integral blank, folding marks, some age-related toning, light foxing, remnants of previous mount to last page, 4to, Naples [aboard the HMS Vanguard], 12 December 1798.

LETTER FROM NELSON TO THE ENGLISH AMBASSADOR IN NAPLES SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON, demanding a declaration from the Neapolitan Government concerning its policy regarding the Ligurian Republic. This was a French client republic created by Napoleon on June 15th, 1797. Its government was modeled on that of the Directory in France and it was tied to France by alliance.
