Magic Lantern American Civil War Interest (1861-1865)
A Collection of Unusual Hand Coloured Wooden Magic Lantern Slides marked Carpenter & Westley relating to the American Civil War (1861-1865) comprising; a slide of General Nathaniel Banks (1816-1894). At the outbreak of the Civil War, Lincoln appointed Banks as one of the first political Major Generals and he was appointed to command newly raised volunteer troops. A slide of Elmer Ellsworth who was a US army officer and the first conspicuous casualty of the Civil War on the 24th May 1861, a slide of Colonel James Cameron of the 79th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment who was killed on the 21st July 1861 at the First Battle of the Bull Run, a Slide of William Sprague, 27th Governor of Rhode from 1860 - 1863, who participated in the First Battle of Bull Run while he was sitting Governor. A Slide of General George B McClellan, nicknamed "Little Mac" and "Young Napoleon". He is credited with skillfully reorganising Union Forces in the first year of the Civil War. A Photographic Lantern Slide of General Ambrose Burneside, prominent union general during the Civil War and also governor of Rhode Island, originator of the fashion of sidewhisker's, later known as Sideburns and finally, a hand coloured slide of twelve of the Union Army Generals of the American Civil War.
