A rare George II sterling silver shaving jug, London 1752 by Paul Crespin (this mark reg. 4th July 1739)
Of plain oval baluster form upon a stepped oval foot, the C scroll handle with thumbpiece. The domed hinged lid raised by a scroll thumbpiece, the spout with a hinged cover. Fully marked underneath foot, makers mark only to lid flange, the spout cover unmarked.
Height – 18.8 cm / 7.25 inches
Weight – 471 grams / 15.14 ozt
Paul Crespin (1694-1770), a prominent Huguenot silversmith, his first marks being registered between July 1720 and December 1721. From 1739 working from Compton Street, The Golden Ball, St Anne’s Soho. Shaving jugs often formed part of a set with a shaving bowl and a covered soap or ‘wash ball’ box.
