Late Qing Dynasty.
Sitting wearing a strapped hat, with a gentle smile and a long beard extending to a round belly below a stiff belt, dressed in long robes with a dragon to his left and a mythical beast to his right, his left hand on left knee and right hand holding a book, all resting on an irregularly shaped integral stand, the reverse with a hollow chamber and cover, 33cm H. (2)
Provenance: an important South African private collection, acquired between the 1960s and 1980s, thence by descent to the present owner.
