A SAMSON CHINESE-STYLE SANCAI-GLAZED LUOHAN

十九世紀 法國薩姆森三彩羅漢坐像

The Luohan modelled in a seated position with hands resting on his lap, dressed in long flowing robes decorated in tones of green, yellow and brown, open at the chest to reveal a biscuit body, his face wearing a serene expression, sat atop a separate pierced rockwork base, the interior of the figure with a black ‘ES’ mark,

Note: The present lot is based on a sancai-glazed figure of a Luohan which is housed in the British Museum and dated to the Liao Dynasty, museum number 1913,1221.1.

A similar sancai-glazed figure of a Luohan was offered at Sotheby’s New York, The Hundred Antiques: Fine and Decorative Asian Art, 29th September 2021, lot 1064. A slightly-smaller figure with a comparable pierced rockwork base, although decorated overall in a turquoise glaze, was offered at Sotheby’s New York, Important Americana: Silver, Chinese Export, and Prints, 22nd January 2021, lot 482.
