Nolin (Jean Baptiste) L'Amerique ou Le Nouveau Continent, scarce map of the Americas, showing a speculative northwest passage, the Mississippi extending into Canada, and Florida as an archipelago, Pacific islands misplaced or spurious, a large but incomplete coastline of New Zealand, with Europe and the British Isles presented in pronounced perspective, large title vignette with a river god and coat-of-arms of 3 French cockerels, upper left, engraved map with original hand-colouring, 455 x 595mm., central vertical fold, 2nd state, Paris, 1742. Dedicated to John Law, the Scottish financier in charge of France's finances during a period of economic hardship following several expensive military campaigns. A major part of his recovery plan included capitalising on French holdings in Louisiana, hence the focus on the Mississippi and the river god, but which went awry and led to the major financial crash, the Mississippi Bubble.
