λ A PAIR OF HARDWOOD EBONY AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID DECORATIVE SHELVES
Possibly Egypt or Turkey for the Western export market, ca. 1870 - 1900
Each of rectangular shape divided into three horizontal registers, the top with a short balustrade made of ivorine, ebony and mother-of-pearl, the central section with two movable wooden flaps each, carved with pairs of Moorish cusped arches resting on ivorine columns, the bottom with further decorative segments in a variety of sizes and shapes, each shelf enhanced with Ottoman-inspired marquetry decorative designs including mother-of-pearl arabesques, interlocking vegetal sprays, hexagonal stars, and diamond-shaped fretwork bands inlaid on brown wood, each shelf 55cm x 64cm x 17.5cm at widest points.
