BORDEAUX, RED 2001 MOUTON ROTHSCHILD PAUILLAC MAGNUM

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Premier Grand Cru. 2001.En Magnum

Ullage: good, high neck. Stored in a cool, dark and dry place.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild first introduced the idea of an artist designing the wine label for each vintage in 1924, but it did not become an annual tradition until after the Second World War, when Philippe Jullian designed the label for the famous 'Victory Vintage', a bottle of which was sold in these rooms in 2022 for £6k. Since then, many famous (and some not so famous) artists have designed the label including Jeff Koons, Anish Kapour, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, Henry Moore, Salvador Dali and King Charles III when he was Prince of Wales. This 2001 label was designed by Robert Wilson, an American visual artist, designer and theatre director.

Tasting notes
2001 was a difficult vintage, and good lesser reviews after the excellent 2000 vintage. However the First Growths all produced good wines, and Mouton is no exception.

The wine still has masses of fruit, and has developed attractive cedary and leathery aromas. The tannins are still a little hard, which I like as it will help it age, as will the bright acidity, both of which many commentators will use to denigrate the vintage when reviewing as a younger wine.

I like the fact that this lot is a Magnum, which will age more slowly, but if drinking now, I suggest several hours of decanting to allow the tannins to soften and the fruit and complexity to develop. It is the sort of wine I would even expect it to be surprising better the following day, after decanting for dinner the day before! Christopher Burr MW

Estimated at £800 - £1,200
