Group of letters and signatures by British Prime Ministers of 19th and early 20th century, comprising: Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth (signed envelope panel); Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (signed envelope panel, marked 'private'); John Russell (printed circular with the "Instructions which have been prepared by the Commissioners of Audit for the guidance of the Governors of Her Majesty's Colonial Possessions, in respect to the Security to be required from Parties in the temporary charge of Offices of pecuniary Trust in the Colonies", signed by Russell on the first page, folding marks, some browning to edges, n.d.); Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (autograph letter signed with his initials, to William McKay in Glasgow, reading in part "What can I say to your note received this morning? It is heartbreaking. I can only hope most fervently that this sorrow may pass from you, for man is hardly made to bear such weights. I cannot now write about my plans. I have been trying to find the most convenient day, and have been wishful to ask you if it would not be well that I should pass tonight in Glasgow. But I do not think it possible that I should come to you while this shadow ...over you", two pages, integral blank, folding marks, 8vo, Dalmeny Park, Edinburgh, 10 December 1888); Henry Campbell-Bannerman (autograph letter to "My dear James", reading "I am obliged to you for letting me see Colonel Mellor's letter. But Colonel Mellor's suggestion shall not be omitted from consideration", two pages, 8vo, War Office 1886); Arthur James Balfour (typed letter to A. Hurd, thanking him "for calling my attention to your article in the Fortnightly" and saying "My letter which you refer seems to be correctly quoted, and its terms seem to be quite unambiguous", one page, 4to, 4 Carlton Gardens, 11 October 1910); H.H. Asquith (ink signature as Earl of Oxford, clipped from the close of a typed letter). (7)
