AN ENGRAVED TINNED COPPER BOWL WITH FIGURAL DECORATION
Possibly Deccan, Central India for the Iranian market, late 19th century
Of typical compressed rounded shape, resting on a convex base engraved with stylised arabesque medallions and thin columns, rising to a flared neck and everted circular rim, the exterior densely engraved with two horizontal registers, the body embellished with oval and circular cartouches filled with figural decorations including bazm-o-razm (feast and fight), village and hunting scenes, the space between the scenes filled with Mamluk-revival Y-shaped gridwork, the neck with cusped rectangular cartouches filled with calligraphy interspersed amidst rosette roundels, split palmette scrolls, and framed within two knotwork fretwork bands, the rim engraved with a continuous vegetal spray, 18cm high and 30.2cm diam.
