A MATCHED PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE-ROSE 'LADY AND HORSE' FIGURES

A MATCHED PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE-ROSE 'LADY AND HORSE' FIGURES

Qing Dynasty, 18th Century

Each figure modelled as Wang Zhaojun sat atop a horse playing a pipa, dressed in long flowing robes decorated in pink, yellow, turquoise and blue enamels, each horse stood foursquare atop a base with its head turned slightly to the left, 22.5cm H. (2)

Note: Wang Zhaojun was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, who was sent by Emperor Yuan of the Han Dynasty to marry Chanyu Huhanye of the Xiongnu Empire, to cement friendly relations between the two empires. Wang Zhaojun is said to have departed her hometown on an autumn morning, and as she journeyed northwards she played a sorrowful song on her pipa, causing a flock of geese flying overhead to stop flapping their wings and fall to their deaths.
