Royal – A George III sterling silver milk jug, London 1806 by Thomas & Joseph Guest & Joseph Craddock

of rounded form upon a pedestal square base with a circular section with a reeded edge. The body with half fluted decoration, with the Royal Coat of Arms to one side surmounted by a Dukes’s coronet, the obverse with the Royal crest encircled in the Order of the Garter surmounted by a Duke’s coronet. Flutted strap handle with cartouche thumbpiece. Fully marked underneath.

Height – 12.6 cm / 5 inches

Weight – 244 grams / 7.84 ozt

The arms and coronet are for a son of George III,

Although worn perhaps for Prince George, Duke of Cornwall (1762-1830), eldest son of George III was created Prince of Wales a few days after his birth and as such became ipso facto a Knight of the Garter. In 1811 he became Prince Regent and in 1820 ascended the throne as George IV.
