Emily Caroline Catherine Frances (1810-1872), first daughter of the 5th Earl Cowper, married on June 10, 1830, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885), the great evangelical philanthropist, who is commemorated by the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. Lawrence painted Lady Emily when she was about three years old.
