λ AN ANGLO-INDIAN CARVED SANDALWOOD BOX
Mysore, Karnataka, Southern India, mid to late 19th century

Of rectangular shape, resting on four protruding feet designed as lion paws, the body and detached lid profusely carved with several registers of finely executed decorative motifs including oval medallions with parakeets and vegetal sprays, rosette roundels, floral trellis and stylised vegetation, the central panel of the lid raised and featuring pairs of regardant parakeets below kirtimukha monstrous faces, all against a dense background of flower sprays, a circular ivory medallion in the centre, the interior divided into two registers, the one below vacant, the one above with nine differently sized compartments, the pommel of each compartment's lid a rounded ivory bead, the lids enhanced with a carved spiral design, 16cm x 33.5cm x 19cm.
