A pair of George III sterling silver sauce tureens, London 1797 by Paul Storr (1771-1844, first reg. 12th Jan 1793)

Each of navette form with reed loop twin handle, all upon a pedestal oval foot. The pull off lids of conforming shape surmounted by detachable cast heraldic finials of a lion sejant. The lid and body engraved with a crest of a caltrap, between two wings. Registration marks to the bases of four and three dots, the lids with two and one. Each fully marked to the foot rim edge, the lids with part-marks. (2)

Weight – 1369 grams / 44.01 ozt

The engraved crest is for Coleman of Langley, co. Wiltshire

The crest refers to a member of the Coleman family such as Walter Coleman (1778-1845) or his brother William Edward Coleman (1780-1853) sons of Walter Coleman (1721-1781) and Elizabeth Stephens, both described as of landed property, the heir to both was Walter II’s son Walter III Coleman (1817-1885), whose probate was valued at £7,708 5s 3d. 19th Feb 1886.

The heraldic lion finial may be associated, or, more likely, these tureens were bought as second-hand plate, adding the Coleman crest later.
