A George III sterling silver epergne, London 1762 by Charles Frederick Kandler (this mark registered 24th June 1758)

Shaped oval form upon four scroll and rocaille feet, the pull off central basket with pierced decoration of diaper work with a cast and applied ornate rim of flower heads and rocaille C scrolls, the upturned ends terminating in masks of Hermes with a feather and rocaille calyx. One side with a large C scroll rocaille cartouche engraved with dual crests of a griffin’s head erased with initials below of JS in flourished cursive script, and a unicorns head between wings with initials below of TCAS in flourished cursive script. The opposite side with a smaller cartouche engraved with a crest of a griffin’s head erased. The base section with embossed flower heads such as roses, carnation and chrysanthemums, against pierced diaper work above a cast and applied apron of ribbon tied pendant swags, cornered between four detachable acanthus capped coiled scroll branches, fitted with four shaped circular cast mounted cut clear glass dishes, the rim of trailing scrolls and shells with flower heads. Fully marked to central basket bezel and to base upper section. Two arms with makers mark and lion passant only, one with lion passant only, one with makers mark only. The glass dish mounts with makers mark and lion passant to underside mounts only.
