A JAMUVAR SHAWL SECTION
Kashmir, North India, 19th century
Finely twill tapestry-woven in coloured wools with pinks and reds in prominence, the unusual and slightly irregular large-scale stylised four-lobed floral motifs in-filled with small floral sprigs within a square grid, the green border with undulating crescent motifs, lined and fashioned into a curtain, 195cm x 184cm.
The unusual decoration of the lobed floral motifs in the centre, departing from the standardised paisley leaf motif, and the combination of vibrant colours like yellow, green and red wisely mixed together could possibly indicate that this shawl was made during the Sikh period (1819 - 1846), most likely produced for the European market where it would have been used to decorate interiors or tailored into a coat or long skirt tail.
