CHARLES CUMBERWORTH (ENGLISH, 1812-1852): A LARGE BRONZE MODEL OF NORTH AFRICAN MAIDEN CARRYING AN URN the girl with tied headdress and loose dress revealing her right breast, carrying an urn in her right hand and walking on a naturalistic ground, mid to dark patination, signed 'Cumberworth' 67cm high Cumberworth studied under Pradier from 1829 to 1836. By the 1830s he had rejected the Neo-Classical style favoured by his master and by the Salon for a more naturalistic style. His other famous work depicting Paul et Virginie in Mauritius and the present Orientalist work demonstrate his interest in more exotic subjects. Related Literature: P.
