A Victorian South Africa Medal with 1879 clasp, awarded to TPR J. MAC CARTHY. BAKER S HORSE, no ribbon.  Notes:  219 of these medals were awarded to Bakers Horse, 202 with the 1879 clasp. Bakers Horse – Commandant Francis James Baker, a former soldier, arrived in the Cape in 1877 and during the 9th Cape Frontier War raised a unit of irregular cavalry that was disbanded in 1878. After Isandlwana, he raised a new unit of about 140 men in the Eastern Cape for the Anglo Zulu War. They wore yellow or brown corduroy uniforms and the customary wideawake hat. In late 1879, Bakers Horse joined No. 4 Column, the squadron fought at Hlobane with Leiutenant Colonel Redvers Henry Buller’s force and also at Khambula. As part of Wood’s Flying Column in the 2nd Invasion of the Anglo Zulu War, a squadron took part in the skirmish at Zungeni and two squadrons participated in the White Mfolozi reconnaissance and fought in Ulundi. The unit returned to the Cape and was disbanded in August 1879.
