A George VI sterling silver copy of the Lanark bell, London 1945 by Wakely and Wheeler
Supported on a tri-form stand with a painted wooden base. Engraved with a facsimile crest within crossed laurel branches and “Replica of the Lanark Silver Bell, won b Viscount Astor’s b.f Amber Flash. Sept 1945. Fully marked to edge, underneath and part-marked to stand.
Height – 24.6 cm / 9.75 inches
The Lanark silver bell is one of the oldest sporting trophies in existence. The trophy was first awarded to Johne Hamilton in 1628 and thereafter given as a prize for horse racing on and off for the next three centuries, decline of the Hamilton racetrack meant it was last awarded in 1977.
