A George III sterling silver sugar basket, London 1792 by Henry Chawner (reg. 11th Nov 1786)
Of navette form upon a stepped oval pedestal foot, with reeded rims. The body with pierced and bright cut engraved decoration of a circled rosette border between lines, with a cartouche engraved with initials MC in flourished cursive script. A reeded swing handle and fitted with a removable ‘blown-in’ blue glass liner. Fully marked underneath, the handle with lion passant only to the top and with scratch weight underneath 11”13.
