A Victorian sterling silver wine ewer, London 1873 by Martin, Hall and Co

Of urn form upon a domed circular foot, the waisted neck with beaded rims topped with a hinged lid of conforming shaped surmounted by a detachable cast pineapple finial upon a leafy calyx. The acanthus capped C scroll handle (detached) with ivory insulators, the lower junction formed as bifurcated scrolling acanthus leaves. The body with engraved decoration of architraves of scrolling strapwork alternating with pendant bouquets of foliage. The foot and the upper section with embossed bands of acanthus leaves. The front engraved with a presentation inscription reading “Presented to James J. Roughton Esq in acknowledgement of his gratuitous services for many years as medical attendant of the Kettering Dispensary October 1889”. Gilt interior. Fully marked underneath spout, part-marked to lid and finial.
