A pair of George III sterling silver candlesticks, London 1781 by Joseph Steward II (reg. March 1768)
The square bases with acanthus leaf and beaded rims, a band of trailing leaves between beading, the central column of square cross section with beaded edges leading to a fluted square knop, the capital also beaded. Each fitted with a removable circular sconce with beaded edge. The bases engraved with a contemporaneous crest of a lion’s head erased pierced in the neck with a spear in bend dexter. Filled. Each fully marked to the edge and with makers mark and lion passant only to each sconce. (2)
Height – 30.7 cm / 12.2 inches
The crest is probably for Pratt, sometime of Cabra Castle, Co. Cavan, Ireland or Oving House, Aylesbury
