TWO SAFAVID-STYLE FIGURAL CUERDA SECA POTTERY TILES
Qajar Iran, late 18th - 19th century

Comprising two similar Safavid revival pottery tiles, each of square shape, painted in green, blue, yellow, brown and manganese, on white ground, each with a portrait of one of the characters from the Book of Kings (Shahnama) of Ferdowsi, set in-between drawn curtains and against a background with pebbles, each figure identified by their names in black 'Tur' and 'Ghobad', the first one the second son of the legendary King Fereydun, the latter also known as Kay Kawad, descendent of Manuchehr and one of the members of the mythological Kayanian dynasty, 24.2cm x 24.2cm and 24.1cm x 24.1cm.
