A George II Scottish provincial silver teapot stand, Aberdeen circa 1740-50 by George Cooper (active 1728-58)

shaped circular form, moulded rim, raised on three pad feet. The centre with contemporaneous chased decoration of foliate scroll, shells, and lattice reserves. Engraved with a later 19th century crest of perched on a globe, an eagle rising, collared with a motto below Nec temere, nec timide. Marked with four marks, makers mark twice, three towers and a gothic letter, either an A or E.

Diameter - 15.7 cm / 6.2 inches

Weight – 183 grams / 5.9 ozt

The later crest and motto are those of Chinnery

Probably for either Reverend Sir Nicholas Chinnery, 3rd Baronet of Flintfield, County Cork (1804-1868) or his son-in-law, Reverend James Robert Alexander Chinnery-Haldane (1840-1906), Bishop of Argyll and The Isles from 1883.

A near identical example by Cooper, marked the same, was sold Bonhams’s Edinburgh, 19 Aug 2010, Lot 606 (£2,160 incl. premium)
