LOUIS J.M. DAGUERRE (1787-1851) - Design for the Stage, 1817
A small quarto volume, 817/18 in original binding, with the text of two plays: 'L Passage de la Mer Rouge' at Paris's Théâtre de la Gaîté in 1817, designer not identified. The second at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique, is 'Les Machabees', premiered on 23rd September 1817, featuring 'Décorations de M. Daguerre' on the title page.
Gernsheim lists this: 'L.J.M. Daguerre, The History of the Diorama and the Daguerrotype' as the second of thirteen melodramas designed by Daguerre for the Ambigu between 1817 and 1822. Newspaper reviews are pasted in after each of the texts, the latter one heaping praise on Daguerre's work: '...un coup-d'oeil vraiment céleste. Ce travail fait le plus grand honeur à M. Daguerre [sic], jeune peintre'. A further critic congratulates the management on having 'le jeune pentre' M. Daguerre under contract.
