JAMES SCOULER (SCOTTISH, 1740-1812) Portrait of a young Gentleman possibly G. Coke Esq., wearing a red coat, white waistcoat and lace jabot signed with initials and dated 1787 l.r.:J.S. 1782 watercolour on ivory gold frame the reverse engraved, G. Coke Esq. /1782/ Gainsborough oval, 38mm high FOOTNOTE: Scouler was born in Edinburgh. His talent for drawing became apparent at an early age and he moved to London where he attended drawing classes at the St. Martin's Lane 'Academy' run by William Hogarth. The identitiy of the sitter according to the engraved inscripton on the reverse of the frame is probably a member of the Coke family of Holkham Hall, Norfolk. He is possibly the son of Wenman Coke (1717-1776) and the present miniature may have been painted after a portrait by Gainsborough.
