AN 18TH CENTURY INDO-PORTUGUESE (GOAN) CARVED IVORY CRUCIFIX the Corpus Christi figure with painted hair and beard, his head turned to his right and eyes and mouth closed, wearing a rope tied perizonium with fringe edge, carved with a small recess to the back of the head for a relic, raised on a hardwood (possibly calamander) cross on rectangular plinth, the ivory 23cm high, the cross 40cm high Religious sculpture of this type was commissioned in Goa to assist the missionaries in converting the native people to Christianity, but also for export for the European market.
