A PROCESSIONAL KALAMKARI SHI'A BANNER FOR ASHURA COMMEMORATIONS

The glazed joined triangle of fine cotton painted and printed in polychromes, the centre with a zoological calligraphic composition of a yellow lion filled in with the Nad-e Ali prayer marching left towards a cartouche containing the semi-final verse on conquest of the Surah As-Saff (61:13), an animated sun rising from behind the lion of Ali, the red field with elaborate parakeets and stylised hibiscus, the white border with verses from Mohtasham Kashani (1500 - 1588)’s Tarji’ Band in praise of the martyrs of Karbala in black ink nasta’liq script, signed on the top right-hand inner corner the Workshop of Abu Taleb, edged with puce fringe, 364cm x 232cm x 266cm.
