Family photo album c.1860, with 46 insert albumen prints, c. 80x50mm, includes portraits of Mary Carpenter (1807-1877), Dr William Budd (1811-1880), containing the work of several photographers from London and Bristol, including John Beattie and T.R. Williams. Dark brown morocco binding, gilt and raised geometric decorations, gilt edges, metal clasp still attached to top edge, corners and edges very worn, spine coming loose, browning around edges and occasional staining,
Mary Carpenter was an educationist and campaigner for penal reform who sought to bring hope to ‘the young outsiders of society'. She opened a series of schools for girls and poor children in Bristol as well as night schools for adults and campaigned tirelessly for free education.
