A CHINESE APRICOT-GROUND EMBROIDERED SILK LADY'S ROBE.

Qing Dynasty.

Embroidered with peony roundels the apricot ground interspersed with floral sprays, the cuffs, collar and edges finely embroidered with wide borders depicting ladies in a garden against an ivory ground, 105cm H, 128cm across.

Provenance: from the collection of Sheila Rosevear Urquhart (1908 – 1992), thence by descent to the present owner. The memoires are published as Sheila Unrquhart, 2009, Sons of Heaven and document her time in China from her birth until she moved to Burma with her husband in 1932. They also include her own drawings based on the Chinese art collection she amassed and are a touching portrait of an upbringing immersed in Chinese culture in the early 20th Century.
