Welsh interest - A William IV sterling silver cake or bread basket, London 1835 by Joseph Angell I & John Angell I

Of shaped circular form upon a spreading shaped foot with moulded edge. The body with chased decoration of flower sprigs interspaced wit rocaille. The shaped swing handle topped with an asymmetric C scroll cartouche with flanked by foliate scrolls, engraved with a crest of a griffin’s head erased. The centre of basket engraved with an impaled coat of arms surmounted by a helm and foliate mantling, with a presentation inscription below reading “Presented by Sir John Hanmer, Bart, to Thomas Trevor Mather Esqr March 1st 1836” and initials below TJ. Fully marked underneath and part-marked to handle.

The arms are for Kipping impaling Owen

Thomas Trevor Mather (d.c.1846), who married Margaret Thomas, daughter of Rice Thomas of Coedhelen, Caernarvonshire and Margaret Lloyd, daughter of John Lloyd Esq of Pentrehobin (built 1540). Pentre-Hobin, Flintshire became the seat of Thomas Trevor Mather, Esqr.

John Hanmer, 1st Baron Hanmer of Flinshire (1809-1881), the son of Thomas Hanmer (d.1818) Colonel of the Royal Flintshire militia and his wife Arabella Charlotte Dyot-Bucknall. married Georgiana Chetwynd (d.1880), daughter of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet (1783-1850) of Brocton Hall, on 3 September 1833 in Grendon, Warwickshire.

He succeeded his grandfather, Sir Thomas Hanmer (1747-1828, as third baronet, he was M.P. in the liberal interest for Shrewsbury from 1832 till 1837, for Kingston-upon-Hull from 1841 till 1847, and for the Flint boroughs in six parliaments, from 1847 till 1872. In 1872 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hanmer of Hanmer and Flint, both in the county of Flint.
