A George III sterling silver five bottle cruet, London 1768 by Jabez Daniell & James Mince

The frame of circular form with a corded edge, the pierced gallery of scroll work with a gadrooned rim, all raised three open work claw and ball bracket feet. The central carrying handle with twisted stem and shaped loop, the open work bottle divided with gadrooned edge, held in place by a shaped retaining nut. The gallery with a cartouche later engraved with an initial C in gothic script. Fitted with five clear glass bottles, two casters fitted with contemporaneous unmarked silver lids of double baluster form with pierced and engraved decoration, a cayenne petter bottle with gilt copper scoop. An oil bottle and a later silver-plated mounted mustard pot with Fiddle pattern spoon. Fully marked underneath, makers mark and lion passant only to piercing, the central carrying handle unmarked.

Daniell and Mince were specialist caster producers, which also include cruet frames such as this and Warwick cruets. James Mince was trained by Jabez Daniell, and Daniell trained by the notable Samuel Wood (d. 1790, Wood was trained by Thomas Bamford and Bamford trained by Charles Adam, a continuous line of an 18th century specialism in the silver trade.
