A YOUNG RAJPUT RULER IN DURBAR
Possibly Marwar (Jodhpur), Rajasthan, North-Western India, 19th century

Opaque pigments and ink heightened with gold on paper, the large-sized vertical composition portraying a white-clad Indian ruler or prince, possibly Raja Ram Singh of Marwar (1730 - 1772), seated in durbar against a large orange bolster, surrounded by several courtiers, possibly advisors and military commanders, in the foreground a group of musicians entertaining the courtly gathering, the reverse with an old cataloguing label reading King with Attendants, Rajasthan 18th century, and three lines of black ink Devanagari script, the first reading Shri Ram Ji, the second mentioning a picture of Maharaja Bahadur Singh Ji by Hari Sanji (?), mounted, glazed and framed, the painting 39.5cm x 31.5cm, 56cm x 47cm including the frame.

Provenance: purchased from a private Dutch collection.
