A LARGE IZNIK-STYLE POTTERY SPOUTED EWER
Possibly France, late 19th - early 20th century

Of large bulbous shape, resting on a splayed and rimmed foot, narrowing at the shoulders and rising to a ringed tubular neck and circular mouth with a gently everted rim, on opposite sides of the shoulders a large curved handle and a sinuous spout with a dragon head, an S-shaped band joining the spout to the neck, possibly inspired by metal models, the ewer polychrome-painted in a bright palette of turquoise, cobalt blue, yellow, and red, with black outlines, all painted on a white ground, the body decorated with Western amphoras emanating arabesque medallions and foliage, alternating with long and lush rosette stems curving almost into a circle around pomegranate-style flowers, the handle and spout each with a spotted design and the foot with a yellow band of intertwining arabesques, the underside of the foot marked with a turquoise and black swirl and the numeral '3656', two wiring holes on the foot, 36.5cm high.

A very similar ewer attributable to the French Samson manufacture was sold at Sotheby's London, 31 March 2021, lot 133, exhibiting the same motifs and palette of our lot. Noticeable differences include the lack of a domed cover in our lot, and the additional stems emanating from the vases on either side of the body in theirs.
