Autograph collection including letters, cards and signatures by prominent artists, philanthropists, politicians and officers, highlights include: George Peabody (sending his autograph, as per the recipient's previous request, 25 November 1867); Philip Hermogenes Calderon (two autograph notes, one accepting an invitation, the other sending a cheque, 1891); Lawrence Alma Tadema (signed card); Sir Thomas Musgrave (clipped signature); Sir Harry Smith (clipped signature); Dwarkanath Tagore (letter signed, reading "Although I am not personally acquainted with you, but from my intimacy with your brother Edward I take the liberty to ask you to call on me this evening and dine here at seven", 4 September 1845); Sir Thomas Munro (warrant for payment "I will thank you to send me a bill on Madras for the amount on my private account", Ballari, India, 22 February 1802); John Lubbock (seven autograph letters signed and one written in secretarial hand, mostly discussing social engagements and banking business, 1883-1901); Luke Fildes (two autograph letters, one to Sir Charles Russell, saying "I saw your cob today. He is really a nice one and I wish I could bring myself to be satisfied with his size for he has been so highly recommended to me. I look forward to having but very few transactions with horses so would like, while I am on this particular business, to please my fancy - if I can do so- by getting something bigger", 18 December 1891; the other saying he will not be able to attend a meeting of 'The Georgraphic', 10 June 1901); George Herschel (two autograph letters of social content, 1906 and 1924); Frank Dicksee (signed complimentary card); Henry Irving (four autograph letters on Lyceum Theatre headed paper, discussing theatre business, 1888-1895); Pearl Craigie (letter suggesting a few names to be submitted to a Committee, 5 May 1898); Beatrice Harraden (two letters to Miss Blackburne, one rejecting an invitation to deliver a speech); Sir Charles Adam (clipped signature); Olaus Henrici (signed ticket admitting to a class of Mathematics at the University College, London, 1870-1871) and others; v.s.,19th century - early 20th century (qty)
