De Bry (Theodor, Johan Theodor & Johann Israel) [Great Voyages, part IV] Benzoni (Girolamo) Americae [pars quarta] sive Insignis et Admiranda Historia de Reperta primum Occidentali India a Christophoro Columbo anno MCCCCXCII, FIRST EDITION, issue with 'Rudolphus II' on titles, 2 engraved titles in elaborate borders, each with first words cut out and replaced to remove 'pars quarta', folding map of the West Indies with parts of Florida and of Central and South America, torn with loss to upper part, and at fold, mounted, 23, only, of 24 engraved plates, numbered I-XXIII at head of page, without XXIV, replaced by leaf with half-page engraving 'Americae Retectio' above 'Epigramma Iani Iacobi Boissardi Vesuntini ad Theodorum de Bry' usually found in preliminary ff, versos of pls V, XIIII & XVIII with different versions of facing engravings pasted on, lacks 2 other preliminary ff., pp 1-8 (i.e. all between first title and A1) and pp 123-126 (P2-3), lower corner of A3 verso repaired with pink paper, holes to M3 and margin of N3, mounted on stubs throughout, some marginal fraying, text browned, spotted and marked, plates more lightly marked, rebound in contemporary blind-stamped calf covers, rubbed, backed with modern blind-stamped calf, folio, Frankfurt, 1594. *** The fourth part of De Bry's great collection of voyages, comprising the first part of Benzoni's history of the discovery of the New World, including the famous map of the West Indies, with the islands disproportionally large and including depictions of Columbus' ships.
