Syria, first half 20th century
Of tall rectangular shape with a triangular back, resting on three bracket feet, the upper section decorated with four small niches framed by cusped arches and a central rectangular niche protected by an openwork grid with carved vegetal trellis and mother-of-pearl-inlaid geometric star patterns, a horizontal grid of globular wooden openwork at the top reminiscent of mashrabiya windows; the lower section with a similar arrangement, the vegetal grid of the central niche replaced by a large cusped arch; and in the middle two mother-of-pearl-inlaid wooden boards reminiscent in style of Mamluk minbars covering a triangular cupboard space; the overall wooden structure intricately carved with foliage and split palmette scrollwork, and enhanced with bone and mother-of-pearl-inlaid floral and circular decorations, 169.5cm x 65cm x 32.5cm.
