LORD GANESHA ON A THRONE
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE GERMAN COLLECTION
Possibly Jaipur School, Rajasthan, North-Western India, early 19th century
Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the vertical composition depicting the Hindu elephant-headed god Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles, seated on a golden throne surmounted by a caparisoned and gem-encrusted parasol, his hands holding his attributes including a golden club, an ankus, a rosary bead bracelet, and a tray of his favourite treat, laddus, a black mouse to his left, his vahana (vehicle), the scene set within white rules and pink and bright red borders, mounted, glazed and framed, 31.5cm x 22cm including the frame.
A similar 19th-century painting with the same subject but from the Bikaner school successfully sold at Christie's New York, 17 - 27 May 2016, lot 65.
