FIVE DAMASCUS POTTERY TILES WITH LOTUS, ARABESQUE AND SAZ LEAF
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE LONDON COLLECTION
Damascus, Ottoman Syria, late 16th - 17th century
Comprising five square tiles, all underglaze painted in cobalt blue, turquoise and sage green on white ground, likely all from the same composition, three tiles featuring repeating designs seeing a portion of a lotus flower filled with an interlocking vegetal arabesque in the centre, and two crossing stems with a saz leaf and spotted Chinese cloud, 26cm x 25cm, 24.6cm x 25.1cm and 24.9cm x 22.5cm; a fourth tile seemingly a reflection of the same design with the addition of half a hatayi flower cut off by the turquoise and white borders, 25.3 x 22.2cm; and the fifth tile with a curved saz leaf and rosette sprays set between a cloud motif and two palmette outlines filled with split-palmette trellis, 25.1cm x 25cm.
Provenance: Previously part of a Private Collection based in London and formed between the 1970s and 1980s.
