Jean Prouvé (French 1901-1984) for Vitra, Switzerland
'Solvay' or 'S.A.M Bois Table', originally designed 1941, this model later
Oak, powder coated steel
Vitra plaque to underside
74cm high x 110cm wide x 260cm deep
Note
Prouvé's design philosophy, which fuses functionality with aesthetics and engineering can be seen throughout his work. Conceived during World War II for the chemical company Solvay, the table is distinguished by its construction which reveals the static forces at play. Due to wartime metal shortages, Prouvé would use solid wood for the legs, characterized by their curved shape, only using metal for the cross sections.
