Astor (Waldorf), 2nd Viscount Astor

Astor (Waldorf), 2nd Viscount Astor

Hunting journal compiled by Waldorf Astor between 1900 and 1901 during his stay in England, including an entry covering the death of Queen Victoria on January 22nd, 1901 reading "So the poor Queen is dead. I must say I was astonished at her holding out so long as on Sunday it seemed hopeless while yesterday it was long odds against her being alive this morning yet the morning papers gave very sanguine accounts...I went up to town in black clothes today and was rather astonished when from the train I saw the flag at Windsor still flying at the masthead...no one knows exactly what will happen. How long will everyone wear mourning? Exactly what will be stopped? All theatres, hunting, racing etc. for some time of course but how long?...Tailors of course will have a splendid harvest but actors will lose heavily and so will so many other trades and professions", paper-covered boards, 4to, 1900-1901; with Astor's account book mostly featuring his daily expenses that reflect the typical lifestyle of a wealthy gentleman (2)

Estimated at £800 - £1,200
